Rattler: Facts, History and Status of Michigan’s Sole Venomous Serpent with author Aaron Veseleank
June 4th, 2012
Office: Workshops/Classes
Time: 7 pm
Location: Carnegie Building - Downtown Petoskey
The Friends @ the Carnegie will present author Aaron Veseleank, Rogers City resident, on Monday, June 4, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. in the Carnegie Building in downtown Petoskey. Swamp Rattlers is the name of Veseleank’s new book and the topic of his presentation.
Veseleank, 44, has a BS in Political Science from Lake Superior State University and a MA in Political Science from Central Michigan University. Currently Veselenak is an adjunct instructor of Michigan History and American Government at Alpena Community College in Alpena, Michigan. He enjoys writing about various historical and nature-oriented events in the State of Michigan.
In the past five years, Arron and his son Gavin, 13, have driven to local areas of Presque Isle County, Michigan, searching for massasauga rattlesnakes crossing roadways on warm summer evenings. Their purpose is two-fold: to rescue the snakes from death on roads and to observe the snake which is disappearing in Michigan and surrounding states.
Veselenak has always been interested in Michigan’s eastern massasauga rattler. He only began to seriously study them after finding a few while searching for mountain lion scat (droppings) in remote areas of Presque Isle County as a volunteer for the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy. At the time, the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy was heavily involved in documenting evidence of the presence of a natural, surviving original population of cougars within the State. Veselenak’s interest in a remnant population of cougars (panthers) triggered his growing interest in the native massasauga rattlesnake. This was the impetus for his book Swamp Rattler.

3rd Annual Smart Commute Emmet
June 4th - 8th, 2012
Office: Family Fun
Location: Emmet County
The third annual Smart Commute Emmet will be held June 4-8, 2012. The week is intended to provide opportunities and incentives to consider alternative methods of getting to work and school, such as walking, biking, carpooling or taking the bus.

Businesses are encouraged to get their employees involved through the Commuter Cup Challenge, a friendly workplace competition to encourage coworkers to try an alternate commuting method. Teams earn points based on the percentage of total employees who “smart commute” to work.   Smart commuters receive free breakfasts at sponsoring businesses Monday through Thursday, including The Grand Traverse Pie Company and Roast and Toast downtown. The Commuter Cup Challenge Awards Lunch will be held Friday at noon in Pennsylvania Park, also sponsored by several downtown businesses.

Again this year there will be a drawing for fabulous prizes from our sponsors including a new bike, running shoes, walking poles and more! New this year is a FREE bike maintenance class on May 8, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at North Country Cycle Sport that will teach people how to maintain their bikes for a safe commute, as well as a FREE Smart Commute Expo May 27 from 5:00-7:00 p.m at Latitude 45 that will provide additional tips on smart commuting, registration information and refreshments!
